About Beach Ball I

Beach Ball centres on the circle, a simple form carrying colour, play and memory in equal measure. Long drawn to beach balls for their bold shapes and warm colours, they hold associations with joy, community and long summer afternoons by the sea.

The beach ball returns often in memory; drifting between beaches, parks and long grass with friends, and in earlier years with grandparents, where games of French ball became a familiar summer ritual.

This collection is also shaped by the small pleasures of summer: salty sea swims, apricot sun cream, sun-warmed plastic, citrus fruits, Italian gelato and raspberry bon bons.

Colours, objects and memories that stay with us long after summer has passed.

about mila may

Mila May is a contemporary artist living and painting by the sea in Falmouth, Cornwall. With a background in printmaking and a degree in Print from Falmouth University, her practice sits between painting and printmaking, working with acrylic, relief inks and mixed media.

Informed by traditional screen-printing techniques, thin layers of acrylic are brushed and buffed into panel, paper and wood over time, building softness, gloss and depth through a slow and instinctive process of layering, revealing and reworking colour.

Playful forms and warm muted colour palettes sit at the centre of her collections.

studio practice

Painting from her Falmouth studio, Mila works predominantly with acrylic and mixed media, layering paint and drawing onto panel, paper and wood.

Her artworks take inspiration from everyday coastal living, sweet summer delicacies, warm Mediterranean holidays and childhood summers idling outdoors.

Mila's current body of work explores the joyful memories we carry with us; colour, play, nostalgia and the everyday objects and still lifes that quietly shape our lives.
