About Beach Ball I

Beach Ball is a collection shaped by colour, play, nostalgia and hazy daydreams of summers gone by.

This collection grew from studies of circle forms, warm sunny memories, and the small pleasures that accompany summer. Salty sea swims, apricot sun cream, sun-warmed plastic, citrus fruits, Italian gelato and raspberry bon bons.

Long drawn to beach balls for their bold shapes and warm colours, they bring to mind joy, nostalgia and long afternoons by the sea.

They appear often in daydreams; drifting between beaches, parks and wildflower meadows, passed between friends on summer afternoons and, in earlier years, during games of French ball. A familiar summer ritual enjoyed across generations, often accompanied by an ice cream float or two.

This body of work centres on the colours, objects, scents and memories that stay with us long after returning home.

about mila may

Mila May is an artist living and working by the sea in Falmouth, Cornwall. With a degree in Printed Textile Design from Falmouth University, her practice sits somewhere between painting and printmaking, working with acrylic, relief inks and mixed media.

Influenced by traditional screen-printing techniques, thin layers of acrylic are brushed and buffed into panel and paper over time. Colour is built slowly through a process of layering, revealing and reworking, creating paintings rich in softness, depth and texture.

Playful forms, warm muted colours and a love of simple shapes sit at the heart of Mila's collections.

about the work

Painting from her Falmouth studio, Mila works predominantly with acrylic and mixed media, layering paint and drawing onto panel, paper and wood.

Inspired by everyday coastal living, sweet summer delicacies, warm Mediterranean holidays and childhood summers idling outdoors, her paintings celebrate colour, play and nostalgia.

Mila's current body of work explores the joyful memories we carry with us and the objects and still lifes that shape our everyday.

Beach balls, flowers, sailboats, antique pots and deli goods appear throughout her collections, inspired by life's small pleasures and the moments that stay with us long after returning home.
